Continuous Quality Improvement
What is Continuous Quality Improvement?
Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is a management philosophy and methodology committed to the ongoing enhancement of processes, products, and services. It operates under the principle that there is always room for improvement, no matter how effective a system or organization may seem. CQI involves a cyclical process of identifying, prioritizing, and addressing inefficiencies or problems to enhance output quality and operational efficiency. This approach encourages a proactive stance towards problem-solving, utilizing data-driven insights and collaborative efforts across all levels of an organization. CQI helps organizations adapt to changing environments, meet and exceed customer expectations, and achieve sustained performance excellence by fostering an environment where incremental improvements are consistently sought and celebrated.
Embracing SANKOFA in Continuous Quality Improvement for Mental and Behavioral Health Across Africa
Introduction
In a world where the echoes of the Transatlantic Slave Trade still reverberate, alongside the rising tide of negative cultural influences and the erosion of traditional healing practices, there is a pressing need for a tailored approach to mental and behavioral health in Africa. Our initiative adopts the SANKOFA method—an esteemed principle from the Akan tribe of Ghana, symbolizing the importance of reaching back to our roots to move forward. This philosophy guides our Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) strategies in mental health, ensuring they are culturally relevant, historically informed, and deeply embedded in the African context.
Our Vision
Our vision is to transform mental and behavioral health care across Africa by leveraging the SANKOFA method to reintegrate traditional wisdom and confront contemporary challenges through a lens that respects and understands the African heritage and its people's unique needs.
Strategy and Implementation
Historical Contextualization: We integrate an understanding of the historical impacts of the Transatlantic Slave Trade into our mental health programs, acknowledging and addressing the deep-seated trauma it has left behind.
Revitalizing Traditional Practices: Our initiative focuses on reviving and promoting traditional African healing modalities, which have been undervalued and underutilized in the face of globalizing influences. This preserves cultural heritage and provides holistic and accessible care options.
Community Collaboration: We employ a collaborative approach involving local healers, community elders, healthcare providers, and patients themselves. This ensures that our CQI processes are inclusive and reflect the collective wisdom and needs of the communities we serve.
Strength-Based, African-Centered Framework: By adopting a strength-based framework, we emphasize the inherent capabilities and resilience of African communities. This approach fosters empowerment and self-efficacy among individuals and supports the structural development of community health practices.
Education and Advocacy: We provide educational programs that equip practitioners with knowledge of both traditional and contemporary mental health practices. Simultaneously, we advocate for policies that recognize and integrate African-centered mental health strategies at national and international levels.
Impact and Future Goals
Implementing the SANKOFA method in our CQI initiatives has led to more culturally congruent healthcare practices, reduced stigma, and improved mental health outcomes. Looking ahead, we aim to expand these efforts, reaching more communities and further integrating traditional practices into mainstream mental health care across Africa.
